Sports Massage involves the use of deep massage, soft tissue manipulation techniques and exercise advice to address aches and pains caused by sport, injury or simply the stresses and strains of daily life. Sports massage is not only for people who are sports professionals, further are they exclusive to those who are injured. Sports Massage is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, ligaments and tendons. The techniques used have been designed with the aim of providing effective and efficient results from each massage given.
The reported benefits of Sports Massage include:
Improved circulation & lymphatic flow;
Increased removal of metabolic waste
Increase or decrease muscle tone
Increase or decrease muscle length
Break down of adhesions and removal of possible scar tissue
Increased flexibility and range of movement
Assist in mental preparation for sporting participation.
Deep Tissue Massage techniques can be used to address the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Slow strokes with deep firm pressure to release tight layers and contracted areas of muscle and tissue. It aims to correct and undo the patterns of tension in the body that have become chronic and the "norm", restoring movement in the soft tissues. It alleviates pain, muscle spasm and stress from the problematic area, and helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue.
Treatment will be adapted to each individual and massage techniques employed are designed to treat both deep and superficial tissues, similar to those used in sports massage. Skilled manipulation combined with in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology are used to bring about pain relief, and to correct and normale the body’s muscles and soft tissues.
Message from a patient:
"I have been seeing Rachel for some time now. I was training for a full ironman in that took place in July 17 and prior to this from about Sept 16 had been suffering from piriformis syndrome. I had seen other people Physio and sports therapist's and had a couple of weeks in full time therapy. I started seeing Rachel in April 17 and have seen her nearly every week since. I had issues with tight Quads/ Glutes/hamstrings and still the piriformis was playing up. I got to do my race with out the tightness thanks to her expertise in sports Massage and Acupuncture. I'd recommend her to anyone who asks for a great remedial masseur. I'm still seeing Rachel for routine maintenance. Thanks for helping me get through ironman training and the race of my life." - Tony, York
