What to expect: In the first treatment time will be taken to gain a thorough understanding of your main illness or complaint, as well as your general health and lifestyle. This will involve asking questions about your signs and symptoms along with looking at your medical history and medications. We will also ask questions about certain things like your sleeping patterns, diet and your emotional wellbeing. If you are seeking treatment for pain or musculoskeletal problems, we may have to gently palpate the indicated area, in order to assess which muscles/structures are involved. This holistic approach enables us to look at the whole picture and to make a diagnosis that is unique to each individual.
Once the full history has been taken we will discuss a treatment plan, this may include some advice on your diet and lifestyle as well as Acupuncture and/or Massage. Acupuncture is administered using fine, sterile, single-use needles to stimulate different points on your body, it is very safe and you will be informed of each stage throughout the treatment. Typically we use points on the arms and legs but also on other areas if necessary. There are always alternative if you feel uncomfortable about anything.
As well as acupuncture we may use different techniques such as Moxa, cupping, massage or acupressure, depending on which is most suitable. Once the needles have been in for around 20 minutes they will be removed safely and disposed into a sharps bin. It is usual that patients fall asleep during this rest time or at least feel very relaxed. Following treatment, people usually feel very relaxed and calm and have a restful night's sleep. It is not uncommon to feel tired after your first session so we usually recommend that you try not to do too much afterwards.
